The Most Successful Colonization in History Happened on Your Wrist
Stop managing your biomarkers and start inhabiting your life.
The most dangerous thing the wellness industry ever sold you wasn’t a supplement.
It was a secular religion.
“Health Optimizer” is the most expensive persona you will ever wear, and it is a masterpiece of psychological engineering. The engineers of this industry didn’t target your body. They targeted the very cognitive framework that makes you dangerous in business.
They took your refusal to accept “good enough”, that relentless orientation toward the gap between where you are and where you ought to be and they commoditized it. They didn’t sell you on the fear of decline. They offered you Performance Language. Peak output. Biological potential. Longevity as a competitive edge.
The Biological Panopticon
In the 18th century, philosophers designed the Panopticon; a prison where inmates are watched by an invisible guard. Eventually, the prisoners began to police themselves because they assumed they were always under observation.
The wellness industry has done something more sinister: They built a Biological Panopticon and convinced you to strap the warden to your wrist.
In the Black Mirror episode “Arkangel,” a mother uses a system to track her daughter’s vitals and filter her stress in real-time. It turned the girl’s life into a Biological Panopticon—a prison where the inmate is under constant surveillance until they eventually lose the ability to self-govern.
The tragedy wasn’t that the system failed; it’s that it worked. By the time the daughter was fifteen, she was biologically incapable of navigating reality because she had never been allowed to feel it without a digital intermediary.
Black Mirror Season 2, Episode 4 “Arkangel”
You are now the prisoner, the guard, and the architect. You no longer need an external authority to tell you that you are failing; you have commissioned a digital overseer to do it for you. This is Digital Colonization.
In 2017, researchers identified “orthosomnia” a condition where high-achievers develop insomnia not from a lack of sleep, but from the anxiety of pursuing a perfect sleep score. These are people who feel exhausted despite sleeping deeply, simply because their tracker issued a decree of failure.
When you trust the dashboard over your own nervous system, you have committed an act of treason against your biology. You have admitted that you no longer know how to be alive without permission from a piece of plastic made in a factory. The device is an usurper. It sits on your skin like a tiny, plastic king, issuing daily mandates on your worth.
The False Virtue of the Infinite Loop
The industry calls “constant optimization” a virtue. It is actually a Factory-Mindset Habit designed to ensure you never arrive.
The “Health Optimizer” identity is structurally prohibited from completion. The moment you declare yourself well, capable, or done, you stop being a customer. The identity requires a self that is always becoming, never being.
The philosopher Alan Watts called this “The Backwards Law.” The more you pursue a destination, the more you confirm its absence. By tracking your “calm,” you signal to your lizard brain that you are currently in a crisis. Every upgraded biomarker reveals three more to “fix.”
The finish line is not a destination; it is a product feature.
The Sovereign Reclamation
Your ambition was never supposed to be infinite. It was supposed to be directional; pointed toward something real, not orbiting a moving target indefinitely.
The true mavericks of history didn’t optimize harder inside the existing game; they stepped outside the game entirely. They recognized that the rules were designed to keep them playing, not to let them win.
The bravest thing a high-achiever can do right now isn’t find a better protocol. It is to recognize that the work is already done. There is a version of physical life that doesn’t require you to be enrolled in a subscription. It’s a return to a body you’ve stopped fighting, a body that acts as an Oracle, not a project.
Health is not a performance. It is the reclamation of your humanity from the hands of those who wish to manage it indefinitely.
The Gate is Open
If you are still checking your wrist to see if you are recovered, you are a subject of the optimization empire. You are living in a simulation of vitality while your actual life waits for you to return.
The loop does not dissolve through awareness alone. Seeing the bars of the cage is not the same as walking out of the door.
I am looking for the few who are done being “students” of their own data and are ready to become believers in their own biological authority. If you are ready to stop managing your health and start inhabiting your power, the exit is here.
Email me at info@lesliegilbert.online with the subject line: I’m Done Optimizing. Tell me what your life looks like once you stop asking a device for permission to feel good. We’ll start there.
Your Life Is Calling,

I stopped wearing a wrist watch (othe old skool round dial with 12 numbers and 2 hands) over 35 years ago.
I was astonished at how many time a day I'd glance at my, now empty, wrist to check the time even though I had no need to know the time.
35 years on and I still mange to get through my days without knowing what the time is every 10 minutes.
Amazing. These devices are creepy AF
